Mar Angélica Molina began making films in high school with their mom’s camcorder and editing them with the family’s VHS recorder, much to the annoyance of the five hundred Colombian relatives Mar lived with in Queens. Mar’s curiosity, tech savvy and independent spirit have informed their ambitious and distinctive filmmaking style ever since.

After studying theory, video art and experimental film at Bard College, Mar went onto hone their storytelling skills in NYC’s cutting rooms, most notably at commercial boutique Final Cut Editorial and documentary landmark Maysles Films. It was through editing that Mar discovered writing and went on to achieve a screenwriting MFA from the University of Southern California.

Mar’s TV writing credits include co-producer on ANNE RICE’S MAYFAIR WITCHES (S1 & S2) for AMC, story editor on FANTASY ISLAND (S1) for Fox, and staff writer on ON BECOMING A GOD IN CENTRAL FLORIDA (S2) for Showtime and PARTY OF FIVE for ABC/Freeform. Their half-hour comedy, PAPI, is in development with Gina Rodriguez’s I Can and I Will Productions.

Mar has written, directed and produced several shorts: the newly completed THALIA (2024); FERNANDA (2022), which screened at Frameline, Outfest, NewFest, and more.; VALENTINA (2018), which was licensed by HBO and aired globally; and the comedy web series DICHOS (2019). Mar is a 2021 AFI DWW+ fellow, a Tribeca Institute 2020 Through Her Lens fellow, a 2018 Sundance Episodic Lab fellow and a 2017 Sundance New Voices Lab fellow.

Mar’s work combines art house and commercial aesthetics to draw audiences into the lives of nontraditional protagonists fighting forces of shame, apathy, and capitalism with often unpredictable consequences.

Mar is based out of NY and LA and is repped by UTA and 42.
